PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Artist Ryan Peltier thoughtfully combined animated moments of community with local advocacy – and pride – in his buzzing fourteen story mural. Wavy lines signify, more literally, the transportation efforts to connect the area, but also symbolize a deeper ethos: the fact that the city, as a whole, is proud to collaborate and work together towards the common good. With beloved local landmarks peppering the scene, the artist brings the messaging of unity back home, giving the entire neighborhood a sense of pride and belonging.

Artist Statement

The original idea, which came from a panel we put together and included a diverse set of people, was the idea of inclusion. I love parades and Minneapolis has some great ones. We used to have the Mayday parade every year. It was organized by the Heart of the Beast Theater, and they would make these giant floats and puppets out of paper mache. People would bring these homemade double decker bikes and moving sculptures. We also have a huge Pride Parade and celebration that goes through Loring Park, very close to where the mural is located. I just wanted to create something which represented the way that I know Minneapolis can be. My work, more generally, is a way for me to escape into a world that makes sense and people can get along. I hope that the Mural captures this spirit and the people who see it can experience this vision of how our cities can be.
