About The Artist

Debra Goertz is a versatile artist, writer, and former professor known for her emotionally direct and richly textured paintings. With a career spanning over three decades, she has exhibited her work in solo and group shows across the United States and internationally, including notable presentations in Newfoundland, the Netherlands, and New York. Goertz holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art and has shared her expertise as an associate professor at Parsons The New School of Design, as well as a drawing and anatomy instructor at the New York Academy of Art.

Her artistic practice is characterized by an exploration of memory, family lore, and the mundane aspects of everyday life. Her "Consequences" paintings focus on the lingering effects of our actions and decisions, the chain reaction of cause and effect, where every choice, no matter how small, leads to an inevitable outcome. The isolated figures in unlikely surroundings convey a sense of unease and tension. In her captivating "Cravings" series, she paints larger-than-life close-ups of food, leveraging saturated colors and cinematic lighting to evoke a visceral, sensory experience for the viewer. Her work, most often executed in oil on canvas or birch panel, is celebrated for its thick brushwork and a penchant for intense tonalities, creating a distinctive style that is both compelling and personal. Debra Goertz continues to create, splitting her time between Plainfield, Illinois, and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
