About The Artist
Gill Bustamante, an independent artist based in East Sussex, holds a BA in Fine Art and works as a full-time artist and art tutor. She creates large, semi-abstract, ethereal oil paintings inspired by walks in nature, capturing the essence of specific places, days, and seasons. Painting from memory, she avoids traditional realism, focusing instead on conveying visual details alongside scents, sounds, and the spiritual energy of landscapes, particularly the ancient, magical ones of England. Her distinctive, evolving style sets her apart from conventional landscape and wildlife artists.
Bustamante’s ultimate goal is to inspire others to protect wildlife, birds, and landscapes, contributing to the growing global movement for environmental care. Her paintings, often featuring pathways, portals, and mysteries, act as captured universes that transport viewers to other times and places, reflecting her desire to transcend the mundane.
From childhood, Bustamante honed her skills by copying wildlife and horse illustrations, later building on these through school and art college. After graduating, she faced challenges breaking into the art world, taking a chambermaid job while galleries dismissed her as not yet “emerged.” Undeterred, she continued creating, exhibiting, and selling work. In the 1990s, she worked with an art agent, mastering formal portrait techniques through animal commissions. By 2010, online sales allowed her to explore new ideas, developing her unique style. Now a self-representing artist, Bustamante values creative control, occasionally collaborating with galleries while focusing on her evocative, nature-inspired art.
